Summary:

This seminar will focus on ways that people can collectively engage with, influence, and change systems that affect their lives, particularly the systems that maintain inequality and oppression. We will explore several approaches to building and exercising community power in local organizations, with a particular interest in those groups that are prioritizing young people’s engagement and leadership. We will critically engage with multidisciplinary theory and empirical research on how and when collective action can be most effective at producing change within communities and societal systems. The goal is to become more precise, strategic, and innovative in research partnerships with groups that are seeking to build community power.

Bio: Brian D. Christens studies organizations that take action to alter power structures and benefit their communities. He is a Professor of Human and Organizational Development at Vanderbilt University.
