Descripción:
Doctoral education worldwide is undergoing profound transformation, characterized by the shift towards structured programs, diversification of the students, and increasing institutional autonomy. These trends reflect a broader rethinking of the purpose and format of PhD training, balancing academic depth with professional relevance and skill transferability.

This presentation examines these global dynamics through the lens of recent changes in Russian doctoral education. Once a model of highly formalized, research-focused training, the system has evolved through various stages of  doctoral models, mirroring international movements towards more flexible and institutionalized approaches. However, this transition has also revealed systemic challenges familiar to many higher education systems: declining completion rates, insufficient funding, misalignment between individual research and broader academic or industry agendas, and variability in the quality of supervision and admission processes.

Drawing on recent empirical data, the talk illustrates how global trends manifest in a national context. The chosen case highlights the universal need for balanced policies that support both excellence and inclusion, foster meaningful academic mentorship, and align doctoral training with evolving scientific, economic, and societal demands. The discussion aims to contribute to a cross-national dialogue on designing doctoral systems for the future.
